Article 9

1. Public and non-public schools are divided into the following types:

  1. six-year primary school, in which in the last year of education, pupils take external test
  2. three-year lower secondary school called gymnasium (gimnazjum), in which in the last year of education, pupils take an external standardised examination, providing opportunities for further education in the schools referred to in point 3, letters a - d and h
  3. post-lower secondary schools:
    1. basic vocational schools with a study period of not less than 2 years and not more than 3 years, which give a diploma confirming vocational qualifications upon passing the exam, as well as further education in the schools listed in letters e and f,
    2. three-year general secondary schools which give maturity certificate upon passing the Matura examination,
    3. three-year specialised secondary schools in the educational profiles of general vocational education, which give maturity certificate upon passing the Matura examination,
    4. four-year technical secondary schools, which give a diploma confirming vocational qualifications after passing the exam, as well as give maturity certificate upon passing the Matura examination,
    5. two-year supplementary general secondary schools for graduates of schools listed in point a, which give maturity certificate after passing the Matura examination,
    6. three-year supplementary technical secondary schools for graduates listed in point a, which give a diploma confirming vocational qualifications upon passing the exam,
      as well as give maturity certificate upon passing the Matura examination,
    7. post-secondary schools with a study period of not more than 2.5 years, which enable people with secondary education to obtain a vocational qualifications diploma upon passing of an exam,
    8. three-year special schools preparing for work, for pupils with the moderate degree of mental retardation or severe degree of mental retardation and for pupils with coupled disabilities. Completion of these schools enables to get the certificate confirming preparing for work.

1a. Test and examination referred to in paragraph 1 point 1 and 2, the Matura examination referred to in paragraph 1 point 3 letters b - f, and extramural examinations referred to in Article 10 section 1, are carried out under the requirements of the core curricula for general  education.

1b. Examination confirming of professional competence referred to in paragraph 1 point 3 letters a, d, f and g, is carried on the basis of performance standards referred to in Article 22 paragraph 2 point 10

2. The minister competent for education and upbringing may specify by regulation, other types of schools than those in paragraph 1 points 1-3 and set rules for their operation.

3. The minister competent for culture and national heritage, in consultation with the minister competent for education and upbringing shall determine, by regulation, the types of artistic schools of public and private, having regard to the schools implementing general education and artistic education as well as schools implementing only artistic education.

5. The minister competent for education and upbringing, in consultation with the minister competent for sport and physical culture, shall determine, by regulation, the conditions for the creation, organization and operation of classes and sports schools and schools of sports mastery, having regard to allowing students to combine sports activities with science, in particular through the appropriate organization of classes.
